Welcome to my essay series on \u201cloving school\u201d vs. \u201cloving to learn.\u201d For the next three weeks, I\u2019ll publish an essay diving deep into the differences between the two.\u00a0This is essay 1\/3<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p>

We\u2019re quick to romanticize \u201clove of learning,\u201d but I\u2019d argue that \u201clove of school\u201d is even more important.<\/p>

What\u2019s the difference, you ask? It\u2019s similar to the difference between \u201cloving\u201d and \u201cbeing in love.\u201d Have you ever thought about that? Falling in love is all warm and fuzzy, all fireworks and butterflies. But\u00a0loving<\/em>\u00a0is something more than that, something solid and unshakeable, like bedrock. Not an emotion, but a choice.<\/p>

The theologian C.S. Lewis paints a lovely picture of this. He says:<\/p>

\u201cWho could bear to live in that excitement for even five years? What would become of your work, your appetite, your sleep, your friendships? But, of course, ceasing to be \u2018in love\u2019 need not mean ceasing to love. Love in this second sense \u2014 love as distinct from \u2018being in love\u2019 \u2014 is not merely a feeling. It is a deep unity, maintained by the will and deliberately strengthened by habit; reinforced by (in Christian marriages) the grace which both partners ask, and receive, from God\u2026.<\/em><\/p>

\u201cThey can have this love for each other even at those moments when they do not like each other; as you love yourself even when you do not like yourself.
